The weather is the issue that frustrates us the most. Weather in Southern California is generally very predictable. Torrey Pines Gliderport offers up-to-date weather information from our onsite reporting station. In general for new students and potential tandem passengers weather should be checked before visiting the Gliderport. Westerly wind conditions are best blowing at least 7mph. This will allow us to get most passengers into the air on a very good flight and will allow students to have optimal kiting and flying conditions. The westerly winds blow at Torrey on average 320 days a year... about 80% of that time it will be blowing at least 7-8mph... which means, we can fly tandems and students nearly every day. Sometimes the winds will be lighter which only means we are limited to the weight we can take with us on a tandem. Basic weather and wind information can be found on the back page of the newspaper, television, and web sites such as msnbc.com, cnn.com, weather.com, etc. For more in depth information or pilots looking to soar and have exceptional flying days at Torrey or other nearby sites a bit more in depth information may be required. |
